As a makeup lover, I’ve learned so much make up application tricks from Youtubers, MUAs, and workshops. My favorite hacks are the ones that involve foundation, considering it’s the base of your entire make up look that’ll make it or break it. After all, who doesn’t want a flawless finish? Read on to see some of the best tips I’ve picked up!
1. Don’t use a silicone-based primer before applying a water-based foundation.

Turns out, once you use a silicone-based primer with a water based foundation, the foundation won’t adhere much on the skin, and it’ll look like it’s “separating” throughout the day. This is probably why some people can’t appreciate the light-but-powerful formulas of water-based foundations — they’ve been using a wrong base all along.
2. Mix a liquid illuminator with your foundation.

I love mixing a few drops of liquid illuminator with my foundation, because it thins out the foundation and makes my base look super natural. Aside from that, it makes my skin dewy and fresh — which is perfect when I’m looking for a more natural make up look.
My personal favorite illuminator is Mac’s Strobe Cream. I always mix that up with my foundation, and the Strobe Cream isn’t too “harsh” on the glitter, which is great if you’re after a subtle glow. Doing this trick works well if you have a matte-finish foundation but you want it to look more three-dimensional.
3. Beauty Blender + Tissue
For some, foundation oxidation can be super frustrating. After all, no one wants to turn a couple of shades darker after a few hours of foundation application! Personally, I get really bummed out when this happens, especially if the foundation is expensive. Oxidation happens if you’re acidic, or when your foundation mixes with your face oils.
To help solve this problem, I learned a tip from one of my favorite makeup gurus, a.k.a. Wayne Goss. What you do is, after applying foundation, take a dry beauty blender and wrap it with a thin sheet of tissue paper (e.g. split a sheet of 2-ply tissue and use that 1-ply to wrap around the beauty blender). Next, bounce the beauty blender wrapped with tissue paper around the face. The tissue and bouncing motion will gently absorb any excess facial oils that could oxidize the foundation.
