Growing up with kayumanggi skin had some challenges to deal with. I had to carefully shop for clothes that would match darker skin tones, hunt for makeup products that would go with my morena skin. It was a tricky situation, especially with our culture often pushing us to have fairer skin. But now it’s the least of my worries, as we’re getting more progressive in accepting diversity, and being more multi-faceted when it comes to defining beauty. And beauty for me is embodying confidence and flaunting that natural glow!

Here’s a short list of reasons why you should embrace your morena skin, too:

Work that morena glow

Highlighters have taken the beauty industry by storm. A lot of girls put on some highlighter as part of their makeup routine — it’s almost as essential as putting on lipstick or swiping on mascara. But with your natural morena glow, your don’t really need to put on highlighter (but if you want to, a little dab doesn’t hurt). Plus you shine under the sun, which is in your favor as our country’s in dry season almost all year long.

Natural tan all day, every day

We don’t need any tanning oil, and we don’t have to put up with the sun burning our skin like it does with fairer girls. We don’t have to think about red burn marks on our skin, and best of all, we have no problems at all with patches and blots of mismatched skin color.

Contour no more!

Our face is naturally chiseled by our dark tones. We can skip the dreaded chore of contouring, leaving us with more time do other things.

Low-maintenance skin care

Once you start embracing your morena skin, you’ll start to realize how maintaining that glow isn’t too much of a chore. No need for whitening and brightening soaps and lotions. You can bask in the sun all day and not worry about getting too dark (but don’t forget to still put on sunblock!). Plus that extra melanin also means you have a lower risk of skin cancer.

You have a troop of morena girls to back you up.

The rise of morena personalities, influencers and artists in the entertainment industry, after years and years of only mestiza beauty being celebrated, shows that we’re moving closer to acceptance. It relays the message to young girls that, whatever shape or size, whatever the color of your skin is, you are beautiful — and that no physical quality can tell you otherwise. You have Bianca Gonzales, Megan Young, and Lovi Poe, to back you up, to name a few.
