Borrowed From The Boys: Menswear Pieces Every Girl Should Own

BY DANICA HOOPER

There’s a debate in the fashion industry on whether women’s wear and menswear should still be acknowledged as separate things, as they are at the moment.

I’ve been thinking about menswear for quite some time now. I love wearing men’s clothing; I constantly borrow shirts from my guy friends and I shop at the men’s section at the store because for some frustrating reason, men’s shirts are made with better materials, better design, and are 10x cheaper than women’s shirts. There is this inequality about women’s wear even in an industry where the majority of executives are women. It just seems kinda ironic, don’t you think?

But I am not here to rant about my feminist views; if you search anywhere on the internet about the war on women’s clothing, there will be thousands of articles about it, believe me. Instead, I am here to talk about what we can borrow from the boys.

T-Shirts

This should be a no-brainer. Should t-shirts even be gender specific? I guess if you’re looking for something to accentuate your curvy figure, then check out the women’s section for a fitted t-shirt. But honestly, if you wanted to show off your curves, why would you wear a t-shirt in the first place?

Jackets

Also another no-brainer. I am like most girls when it comes to my boyfriend’s hoodies — I love stealing borrowing them! They’re so soft and hangs on me so nicely. But this isn’t only for hoodies, I’m talking about denim jackets and bombers, as well. The slouchier, the better.

Jeans

If you go to the women’s section and have the need to buy boyfriend jeans, don’t. Either borrow your boyfriend’s actual jeans if you’re about the same size (or you know, belts exist, too) or buy a pair from the men’s section. They’re cheaper and more authentic.

Hats

Caps, buckets, and fedoras are cute as hell. Don’t buy your own, wear your boyfriend’s.

Razors

Okay, now I know this isn’t an article of clothing but this has been bothering me for so long. I never understood why shaving razors were gender specific. Does the colour pink automatically make women’s hair disappear with such gentle ease? Does the word “extreme” make it more manly? No. They’re razors. They remove hair. That’s their job. Ladies and gentlemen, don’t be fooled by the pastel colors or words you see on these products. They don’t mean anything.

Sidenote: Don’t use the same razor as your bae, use your own, because there some things you just shouldn’t share i.e. toiletries.

So in conclusion, if you can find an item in both the women’s and men’s section, get the one in the men’s because a) It’ll most likely be way cheaper and b) They’re cuter. Sorry, but it’s true. I wish it weren’t, but alas, we live in a world on inequality.
