5 Must-Watch Women Empowerment Movies

Celebrating women should be an everyday occasion no matter what time of the year it is. What better way to celebrate and feel proud of your identity than to chill out with a movie (or five), your favorite snacks, and the closest women in your life?

Here are some must-watch women empowerment movies you can add to your list for the next virtual movie night or sleepover with your gal pals.

Promising Young Woman (2020)

If you haven’t watched this movie yet, what are you waiting for? Without spoiling anything, Promising Young Woman is incredibly witty, thought-provoking, and tackles some very dark themes as well. We promise you won’t regret it.

Little Women (2019)

Little Women is definitely not a new story, as the novel has been adapted many times over. Its many reiterations are a testament to its timeless plot that many women of all ages can still relate to today. The 2019 film is able to highlight each sister’s struggles, hopes, and dreams as young woman living in 19th century Massachusetts.

Moana (2016)

Moana is without a doubt a great family movie that you can enjoy both with family and friends. If you have any daughters, younger sisters, or younger cousins that you would like to empower, Moana is an excellent choice. The newer Disney princesses are far from damsels in distress — they’re strong-willed, independent, and clever to boot. Plus, its beautiful animation and soundtrack make this film nothing short of amazing.

Bridesmaids (2011)

This may not be at the top of the list when you think of women empowerment but Bridesmaids will surprise you. On the surface, it may seem like just another comedy movie that presents women as catty frenemies. Though as you dig deeper, it’s a actually great reminder that having connections with other women is just as, if not more, important as having a romantic relationship. Plus, you’re sure to be in for a good laugh, too.

Legally Blonde (2001)

This heartwarming movie was truly ahead of its time. Elle Woods may not fit the typical strong woman archetype but she is a feminist icon in her own right. She pushed herself to achieve her goals and didn’t let anyone — especially not her lousy ex-boyfriend — tell her what she can and can’t do.
