Forget sweaty summer days — — it’s time to bring out your raincoats, umbrellas, and wetsuits. No seriously — — we said wetsuits. Think about it, what is the perfect clothing for wet weather? A wetsuit of course.
In all seriousness though, If you didn’t already know, peak surfing season typically runs from May through to September. So now would pretty much be the best time to take advantage of the season’s perfect waves.
While the Philippines is generously blessed with breathtaking surf spots all over the country, there are a couple of lesser known spots you might want to check out. Here’s a lowdown on some of the best surf spots in the Philippines to help you decide which waves to hit first.
Gubat, Sorsogon
You might be familiar with Sorsogon for its gentle giants — the whale sharks. What most people don’t know though is that a couple hours away from Donsol’s whale sharks are the semi-deserted shores of Gubat. At Gubat, you can stroll for kilometers on its powdery dark sand and barely come across other souls. So you pretty much have the waves all to yourself.
Bagasbas, Daet, Camarines Norte
Bagasbas is considered to be one of the best beginner’s surf spots in the Philippines; With its small yet continuous waves and the Bagasbas Unified Surfers Association there to assist you every step of the way, you’re definitely in for a one-of-a-kind surfing experience.
Puraran, Baras, Catanduanes
Catanduanes is the usual gateway of typhoons here in the Philippines, one can only imagine how fierce waves can be in this area so Puraran’s big waves aren’t exactly recommended for newbie surfers. For those who aren’t daring enough to give Puraran’s overwhelming waves a shot, there are plenty other things this place has to offer such including underrated white beaches and rugged rock formations.
