Great Minds Think Alike
Starting as a made-to-measure children’s shoe boutique in 1945 by Céline Vipiana, the store quickly grew in number. In 1960, it was not only Celine shoes the brand was creating ready-to-wear pieces for women as well. In 1966, leather accessories such as the Celine wallet, bags, and belt came into being. In 1973, the fashion house changed its logo to the intertwining Cs inspired by the Arc de Triomphe, with this came the signature Celine Triomphe bag. In 1987, the brand was bought by the chairman and CEO of LVMH; but it was not until 1996 that the French label finally became a part of the luxury conglomerate. A year later, at age 84, Vipiana, who remained as creative director, died. She was immediately succeeded by Michael Kors. Until his exit in 2004, Kors used his sportswear sensibilities, as he featured skin-skimming dresses, preppy cashmere tops, and Celine caps. After a string of uneventful creative directors, Phoebe Philo presented an elegant and precise take on Vapiana’s minimalist aesthetic in 2008. Now, under the helm of Hedi Slimane, the label sees a change with an accent-less Celine logo and an expansion of its menswear.
