About Nike

Nike did not begin as the all-conquering sportswear machine we know today. It started in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports, a scrappy operation founded by Phil Knight, a middle-distance runner with a Stanford MBA, and Bill Bowerman, his famously obsessive track coach at the University of Oregon. Before the Swoosh became shorthand for ambition, Knight was selling Japanese Onitsuka Tiger running shoes from the trunk of his Plymouth Valiant at track meets. It was not glamorous, but it was sharp: better shoes, lower prices and a direct challenge to the German grip Adidas and Puma had on the running world.

The name Nike arrived in 1971, after the company’s relationship with Onitsuka Tiger began to unravel. Knight had considered “Dimension Six”, which sounds more like a failed sci-fi film than a sportswear empire, before employee Jeff Johnson suggested Nike, after the Greek goddess of victory. The same year, graphic design student Carolyn Davidson created the now-iconic Swoosh for just $35, giving the brand a logo that looked fast even when standing still. Then came Bowerman’s great kitchen-counter experiment: pouring rubber into his wife’s waffle iron to create a lighter, grippier sole. The result was the Nike Waffle Trainer, a shoe that helped fuel America’s 1970s jogging boom and positioned Nike as a serious technical innovator.

By the late 1970s, Nike had found another breakthrough in Air technology, developed from an idea by former NASA engineer Frank Rudy. The concept of trapping pressurized gas inside a shoe sounded absurd until it became one of the most recognizable cushioning systems in footwear. The Air Tailwind introduced it in 1978, but Nike’s real cultural explosion came in the 1980s. After going public in 1980, the brand needed a new spark and found it in a rookie Chicago Bulls player named Michael Jordan. The black-and-red Air Jordan I was controversial, commercially explosive and culturally irreversible. When the NBA objected to the colorway, Nike turned the ban into marketing gold, helping create the modern sneakerhead era almost by accident.

Nike’s genius has always been its ability to turn performance into mythology. The Air Max 1, designed by Tinker Hatfield in 1987, made cushioning visible and transformed a technical feature into a streetwear statement. A year later, Wieden+Kennedy introduced “Just Do It”, a slogan that moved Nike beyond running tracks and basketball courts into the psychology of everyday ambition. Suddenly, Nike was not just selling shoes. It was selling discipline, rebellion, athletic greatness and the idea that anyone, anywhere, could start.

The 1990s made Nike a global superpower, but not without complications. Its roster of athletes became almost absurdly dominant, stretching from Tiger Woods and Serena Williams to Cristiano Ronaldo and LeBron James. At the same time, the brand faced heavy criticism over working conditions in outsourced factories, forcing it to confront uncomfortable questions about supply chains, transparency and responsibility. Nike’s evolution since then has been a balancing act between cultural influence and corporate accountability, heritage and innovation, mass-market scale and elite performance.

Today, Nike remains one of the most valuable sports and streetwear brands in the world because it understands that a trainer is never just a trainer. From the Waffle Trainer and Air Jordan to Air Max, Flyknit, Vaporfly and Converse, which it acquired in 2003, Nike has repeatedly turned product design into cultural language. In its current era, the brand is refocusing on core running innovation, retailer relationships and sharper global strategy under CEO Elliott Hill. The challenge is different now, but the instinct is the same: move faster, look sharper and make victory feel wearable.
