it’s a match
Meet the power couple that’s serving aces in style and music.

All eyes (and ears) are on rapper Curtismith and singer-songwriter Leila Alcasid as the couple own their game. Whether it’s through sound or style — their unique artistry is defining a new era of modern Filipino music. In the midst of song releases, album launches, and big power moves, one’s left to wonder...how do these two do it? Their secret to managing it all? Simple, really. Each other.

outliers in style & sound

Curtismith — real name Mito — and Leila seem to exist in this space as somewhat of unicorns, never allowing local industry standards to dictate the direction of their artistry. In everything they do and create, authenticity takes a front seat. Curtismith’s style is as eccentric and carefree as his sound. As an artist, the interplay of style & music is very much alive in Mito’s world. For him, these two will always influence one another. You’d normally see the rapper sport Patagonian looks that value comfort over fads. “My go-to outfit is a nice shirt paired with shorts. It’s just chill and very me.” Sporting a knit Lacoste pullover, it’s clear that the artist is most comfortable in laid-back pieces. For Leila, Mito’s carefree take on style adds to his artistry. “I love how Mito doesn’t care about what other people think. He’s stylish because he’s himself.”

There’s a timelessness to Leila Alcasid that’s hard to ignore. Her style rides on classics. “I own a lot of buildable basics that are very versatile. I’m also a huge fan of oversized pieces.” Just like this tennis cardigan from adidas, the singer normally sports cozy ‘fits. On the topic of fashion and music, Leila uses style as a vessel to express herself, and dresses according to her creative mood. “Music puts me in certain moods. If I’m listening to something sultry, I’ll dress a bit more grown up. When I’m listening to upbeat artists, like my fav, BTS, I’m inspired to dress more colorful.” Whether it’s sultry or playful, Mito admires how she dresses authentically. “I love how Leila’s style stays true to herself. She never tries to be someone she’s not. There’s a lot of integrity in the way she carries herself.”

“Music has played such an important role in my life, it’s everything to me. I live, eat, and breathe it.” - Mito
the new gen of OPM

Known for his debut mixtape, “Labels”, Curtismith has carved out a name for himself in the local music scene. A musician through & through, the rapper’s love affair with music runs deep. “Music has played such an important role in my life, it’s everything to me. I live, eat, and breathe it.” It’s no surprise that during the quarantine, he kept himself busy by working on his debut album, Museo (out now!). A synergy of music & art, the album explores the relationship of sound to the visual experience. Museo’s debut single, Downtown as Fruits, captures Mito’s idea of ‘electric saturation’. “I feed off the energies around me. My music normally reflects my current state of mind. In translating that, I want to make it a very tangible experience.” The funky and upbeat track reflects all the positivity that’s been coloring Mito’s days lately.

“My music draws heavily on the strong emotion of love. Whether that’s love for one’s self, or love for others.” - Leila

A star creative herself, Leila shines in songwriting. The self-taught lyricist has a knack for piecing together relatable music in the genre of neo-soul. Mito considers Leila as one of the most talented songwriters he’s ever come across. “She’s a beautiful writer generally and that translates to her songs. She writes some of the most incredible hooks I’ve ever heard.” Proven in her EP, Better Weather, Leila has the uncanny ability to turn her experiences into art that resonates with this generation. “My music draws heavily on the strong emotion of love. Whether that’s love for one’s self, or love for others. ” With themes of falling in love, relationships, and growing up - Leila’s music is all about real experiences. She also champions fellow Filipino music artists, and shares that her ultimate dream collaboration is with the talented local producer & musician, CRWN.

Artists like Mito & Leila lead the charge in reinventing modern OPM. This new wave of creative talent is elevating Filipino music to international standards. Mito shares how he takes inspiration from retro music and mixes it up with modern beats. “My goal is to revive that ‘70s Manila sound when Filipino music was really alive & thriving. ” These days, it’s easy for artists to lose their identity when trying to fit commercial molds. Leila stresses on the importance of having a strong sense of self in this industry. “When you’re writing songs that aren’t your style, it’s always going to feel inauthentic or wrong. My advice is to just stick to who you are, and draw inspiration from your story.

playing doubles

Behind every successful artist is a solid support system. For Mito and Leila, they are each other’s rock. In a generation primed for instant gratification, love seems to be more fleeting than ever. But this pair proves that relationships can still thrive in a fast-paced modern setting. “I love how Mito is so unconditionally supportive of me. He motivates me when I’m being lazy, and makes me want to work harder.” In turn, Mito’s favorite thing about Leila is her kindness. “I think she’s one of the kindest people I’ve ever met, and she inspires me constantly.” Clearly each other’s muses, these artists bring out the best in one another. This just goes to show that in winning the game, you gotta be playing on the same team.

These days, Mito and Leila have been spending more time at home, enjoying a slower paced & more mindful way of living. If not burrowed under covers watching cult favorite ‘Modern Family’ or whipping up a home cooked meal, the two are probably tending to their babies — furbabies, that is. The couple are parents to adorable pups Lou & Noa, who round up their cute squad of four. This calmer routine the pair has settled into is a refreshing contrast to the pre-pandemic life. For Leila, she’s taken this time to cater to her peace. “I’ve really learned the importance of caring for my mental health. Before the pandemic, I would never really take the time to address things going on with me.” For Mito, his biggest takeaway is learning to weather change. “Nothing is permanent. The pandemic showed us how easily things can change. But you just gotta be cool with it. Keep rolling with the punches, you know?”

In a time riddled with countless changes, one thing stays the same — Mito & Leila have each other. And countless resets in the world won’t change that. So what’s next for this pair? For now, they’re focusing on their music and living their best lives together... pups & playlists included.
