tens across the board
Janine Gutierrez heats up ZALORA’s 10th birthday cover in Bench.

Free yourself for a moment and picture the water that breaks on the shore, washing over your footprints in the sand. Feel the breeze against your skin as the afternoon sun melts in the background. You’ve just spent your day hopping from island to island, and dinner’s already on the grill. Janine Gutierrez smiles at the thought of her perfect summer escape, and we lose ourselves in the thought with her. As a self-proclaimed island girl and one of the faces of Bench Body, Janine reminds us about the brand’s core value to #LoveLocal as she hopes to travel more around the Philippines and relive this perfect day.

This need to discover and explore doesn’t end with a simple island adventure, it continues in other aspects of the actress’ life, including her look. Janine glances at the pieces we’ve finished shooting and talks about the Bench summer collection as being vibrant, sexy, and fun. She emphasizes this last word as being the most important part of it all. “Don’t take yourself too seriously, especially in fashion. You have to try things and be experimental. That way you’ll find what you really like.”

“Your clothes should make you feel like a more confident version of yourself. At the end of the day it’s just about what you feel you look good in!”
no style left unturned

From a distance, the world of fashion is easy to break into. It’s a shared experience with the world. Curating a look for yourself however, is another story. It’s an intimate journey that one must go through on their own. “My style is more about my identity, what I feel good in and what I look good in.” Now in her thirties, Janine no longer follows trends with no merit, finely selecting only those that she genuinely loves. “As you get older you identify more with your own aesthetic, and it doesn’t matter anymore about what the trends are.”

Much like the collection, she describes her personal style as classic and sexy. “Your clothes should make you feel like a more confident version of yourself,” she explains. Her present obsession lies with fitted silhouettes paired with a baggy element, keeping it feminine and current. On her days off, she keeps it simple with her go-to look being a combination of a red t-shirt and cool-blue denim jeans. Raid her closet and you’ll discover a collection of neutral pieces which she loves to accentuate with a statement bag, shoe, or accessory. “At the end of the day it’s just about what you feel you look good in!”

The effortless duality is something she picked up from her ultimate fashion icon, her Mamita, the Filipina music legend Pilita Corrales. “She’s always had two personas, one that’s really glam, sexy, and for show, and the one at home where she’s just in a white polo and leggings while still looking classy.” Familial fashion influences don’t end there, as Janine recounts the excitement she felt upon getting cast as a Bench girl, with one of the reasons being her uncle Richard Gutierrez and family friend Solenn Heussaff, whose time with the brand stems as early as the aughts.

cause for celebration

Janine Gutierrez has never flown under the radar. In the ten years that ZALORA’s been present in the Philippines, the actress has made it clear that she isn’t one for us to forget– so much so that she was presented with the ZALORA Female Style Star Award back in 2016. After greeting us a happy 10th anniversary, she walks us through her own journey. “After ten years, I started a new chapter of my career when I moved to ABS-CBN, so I guess there's really something special when it comes to ten years!”

From fashion to film, her collection of accolades has only continued to grow, with one of her most recent wins being the Rising Star Award from the New York Asian Film Festival for her role in Dito at Doon, a film about finding connections, and ultimately, coping during the peak of the pandemic. Despite being unable to attend in person, evident on her face was pure joy. “I was so happy and so grateful. It’s always been my goal to be a part of film festivals outside of the country.” The actress was able to receive her recognition at the Film Ambassadors Night, an event that celebrates the talents of actors and filmmakers who’ve been awarded outside of the Philippines. “To be able to celebrate with the people that I look up to, like John Arcilla and Erik Matti, really made me feel reassured that I was on the right track.”

Having created an extensive list of films, Janine found it difficult to select a favorite, but after giving it some thought, she circles in on the film she’s enjoyed making the most. “Ngayon Kaya. It's a film I made with Paulo Avelino which was supposed to come out two years ago, but then the lockdown started.” To this day, Janine still waits for the cinematic release, but it’s something that her fans can look forward to– hopefully– within the year. In the meantime, why not revisit her 2019 film Babae at Baril, where the actress feels most inspired by her character. “So many things happen to her in the course of that film and as a woman I think it’s important to find your voice and speak up.”

With local and international recognition, a collection of films to be proud of, and her endless support from fans, Janine has a worthy cause for celebration. One then must ask, what will the party look like? She laughs this off and keeps it short and sweet; “Lots of drinks, good music, and good food”.

“Trust your gut, and really get to know yourself and what you want. What’s meant to be will really find you.”
strength in sisterhood

Having celebrated International Women’s Day earlier this month, Janine looks back at her journey and hopes to inspire a new generation of girls to follow their dreams as she did. “Trust your gut, and really get to know yourself and what you want. What’s meant to be will really find you.” Destiny will make its course, but Janine reminds us of one crucial aspect in getting what you want. “You also have to put in the work for you to get it.”

As a woman in the modern world, Janine isn’t exempt from the reality of microaggressions within the patriarchy. Her most common subject of annoyance? Mansplaining. “It’s an annoying everyday thing that just happens.” When asked how men can be more involved and show support for women, she says that you can start there. “[Men can help by] really listening to women. Before explaining something like you know everything, maybe ask first if they know something about it,” Janine continues with some more suggestions, “Then in the workplace; equal wages; equal opportunities; gender parity. I really look forward to the day that that’s a reality.”

“You have to fight for yourself and fight for other women. If you see someone being weird towards a woman don’t be afraid to call them out. You should assert yourself and be confident.”

There’s strength in numbers and Janine Gutierrez reminds us all about the power of sisterhood. “You have to fight for yourself and fight for other women. If you see someone being weird towards a woman don’t be afraid to call them out. You should assert yourself and be confident.” Let your instincts kick in and your fear dissipate, it’s time to stand up for one another.

While Janine herself is a role model for women everywhere, she too has women to look up to. Apart from the ones at home, she looks towards the likes of Jane Fonda and Drew Barrymore. “I just love that there are so many chapters to a woman’s life! Especially Jane Fonda, starting from the daughter of an actor to becoming an award winning actress, to becoming an activist.” The tale is reminiscent of Janine’s own journey, a testament to her own growth and success. “You keep growing throughout your life and you’re able to inspire people from your own personal growth. I like that they take initiative and they’re really passionate. I think that’s something that catches on with the people around you.”

As the shoot wraps up and the set lights dim, Janine takes one final question; what do you hope to see in the world in the coming year? This leaves her quiet for a moment. “I hope for change,” she says with a smile, “I hope everybody gets to move forward from the past two years. I hope for progress.” With the future in mind, we all must continue celebrating our greatest achievements, connections made, and lessons learned. From this point forward, one can only wonder; what comes next?
